Davidson Volleyball Upsets Western Carolina, 3-1, in SoCon Tournament

Greensboro, N.C. - Sixth seeded Davidson upset third seeded Western Carolina, 3-1, in the first round of the 2001 Southern Conference Volleyball Championships at Fleming Gymnasium on the campus of UNC Greensboro.

Quick starts were the key in the first two games. Davidson (15-16) jumped out to a 7-3 lead in game one and was able to stretch the advantage to 13-5 en route to the 30-23 win. The Wildcats hit a sizzling .400 in the first stanza.

Western Carolina took an 8-2 lead in game two, pushing the advantage to 12 at 24-14 and the final margin of 30-18. Similar to the Wildcats in game one, the Catamounts hit .366 in game two to tie the match at one apiece.

Game three was a seesaw battle that Davidson won 30-25.

As had been the case the majority of the night, one team raced out to a lead early in game four. WCU took a 14-7 advantage over Davidson, but the Wildcats rallied back with a 9-0 run to take a lead that they would not relinquish and held on to pull off the upset.

Senior All-Southern Conference selection Christy Attebery led Western Carolina with 21 kills and eight digs on the night. She finished her WCU career as both the school and Southern Conference career kills leader with 2,109. Sophomores Pam Stein and Sara Komosinski both posted double-doubles. Each tallied 13 kills, while Stein had 12 digs and Komosinski added 10. Freshman Stefanie Peters also tallied a double-double with 12 kills and a team-high 16 digs.

Davidson had three players post double-doubles and was led by junior Roberta Quis. She posted 20 kills and 10 digs with a .372 hitting percentage. Senior Jacqueline Ortega added 18 kills and 13 digs, with freshman Kristen Higbee tallying the double with 50 assists and 16 digs.

Western Carolina finishes the year with a 21-11 record. It marks the fourth consecutive season WCU has won at least 20 matches and the 11th time in the school's 23 years of volleyball.
