Myrtle Beach, S.C. -
Western Carolina only managed eight hits and two runs in dropping a 13-2 decision to Coastal Carolina in the Baseball at the Beach Tournament, held in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Catamounts defeated Kent State, 9-5, in the first day of the event and will face Delaware Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at Coastal Federal Field.
Both teams were held scoreless until Coastal Carolina pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the third. The Chanticleers would put the game out of reach by scoring two runs in the fourth, five runs in the sixth, one run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.
Western Carolina avoided the shutout by scoring two runs in the top of the ninth. Pinch hitter Dan Woodley began with a leadoff walk. After pinch hitter Brian Sigmon was hit by a pitch to put runner at first and second, WCU scored its first run when Ryan McCurry's single brought home Woodley and sent Sigmon the third. Two batters later, Michael Roane singled to right field, plating Sigmon.
After collecting three hits on Friday, McCurry once again led the Catamounts with a 2-for-4 performance. WCU starter Dan Foley fell to 1-1 on the season, surrendering 10 hits and five runs in 4.0 innings pitched.
