Panthers Squeeze by Catamounts, 4-3

Atlanta, GA - Western Carolina battled back in the ninth, but could not score in a 4-3 loss to Georgia State.

Both teams scratched across runs throughout the game, with the Catamounts (16-18) taking a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth. All but one of those runs was unearned. Georgia State (16-20) rallied in the sixth with a one out triple down the right field line by Jay Fields. Nelson followed with a single up the middle to plate the run. After Mic Knox flied deep to left, Josh Vandiver drove a ball to deep right center to bring around Nelson and knot the game 3-3. The Panthers would load the bases, but Ryan Foster entered to pitch for Western Carolina and was able to strike out Clint Mize to end the threat.

Nelson led off the eighth with a bunt single for State, quickly stole second, and advanced to third on a Vandiver grounder. With two away, Foster (3-2) threw a pitch in the dirt that got by Chad Emery and Georgia State took its first lead of the game.

The Catamounts threatened in the top of the ninth, putting runners on first and third with one out, but Ronnie Robinson was able to force Rod Goldston to ground into a double play to end the threat.

Robinson (3-3) struggled early in the game, walking four in the first three innings before settling down to earn the complete game win.

The two teams meet tomorrow at 4 pm.
