Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's volleyball team defeated Appalachian State, 3-0, Tuesday night in the Ramsey Center.

"It is always great when Western beats App," stated Head Coach Michelle Hansen. "I am glad we took care of them in three games."

WCU dominated ASU from the start defeating the Mountaineers 30-13 in game one. The Lady Cats recorded 10 kills and one error on 24 attempts for a percentage of .375 to ASU's -.086 in the first game. Appalachian State threatened a comeback in the second game leading 18-16 at one point. However, Western would not let down winning the game 30-24. The third game was not nearly as close with Western handling the Mountaineers 30-10. Western marked a hitting percentage of .548 in the third game to Appalachian State's .028.

"I was very pleased with Christy (Attebery) and Sara (Komosinski) for their smart and aggressive play at the net," said Hansen, "both hit over .500."

Komosinski led the team with a .571 hitting percentage (8-0-14) also recording eight digs. Attebery led the team with the only double-double of the match putting down 14 kills and recording 11 digs. Her 11 digs put her as WCU's career leader in that category. She now has a total of 1,364. Attebery hit .500 for the night (14-3-22).

Senior Karen Nielson led Appalachian State in kills with six. Three Mountaineers led the team in digs with six, Nielson, sophomore Starla Gustafson, and sophomore Alexis Mosley.

Western Carolina improves to a 5-4 overall record and an undefeated 2-0 record in Southern Conference play. Appalachian State falls to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the league.
