Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's volleyball team shut down Southern Conference foe Furman, 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the Ramsey Center.
WCU snapped a three game losing streak to the Paladins with scores of 30-28, 30-18 and 30-27. Furman threatened a win in game one with the score tied at 28. The Catamounts took control of the game and finished off the Paladins putting away the final two points. WCU took Furman handily in game two with a team hitting percentage of .381, for a final of 30-18. Furman began to come back in the third game but could not handle Western as the Cats recorded 13 kills to Furman's nine.
Freshman Stefanie Peters and senior Christy Attebery recorded 12 kills each to lead the team. Attebery recorded the matches only double-double with 18 digs. Freshman Tricia Eble led the team in hitting percentage with .417 (7-2-12) a career-high for the middle blocker.
Abby Simon led the Paladins with 15 kills, while Amber Montague and Laura Bush led in digs with 10. Furman falls to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in league play.
WCU improves to a 7-6 overall record and 4-1 in SoCon play and remain undefeated at home (6-0). The Cats will travel to UNC Greensboro Sunday, September 30 for a makeup match that was scheduled for September 14. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
