Cullowhee, N.C. -
Senior reserve Brittney Scarberry scored all 17 of her points in the second half to lead College of Charleston to a 64-59 victory over Western Carolina Monday night at the Ramsey Activity Center.
Scarberry's effort, spurred by an 11-of-13 performance at the free throw line, helped erase a 30-27 WCU halftime lead and a 13-point (42-29) Catamount advantage with 15:52 left to play. After gaining its largest advantage of the night, WCU would only score four points over the next eight minutes, as the Cougars were able to take its first lead of the game at 48-48 with 7:45 left.
The College of Charleston (10-5, 4-3 SoCon) also had a big night from reserve Becky Wollenberg, who scored nine of her 16 points in the second period. The senior guard drained both 3-point attempts in the first half and added another in the second to give the Cougars a two-point lead (55-53) with 3:39 left.
Although Western (10-5, 3-4 SoCon) would tie the game at 55, Wollenberg hit a layup with 1:52 left to give the Cougars a two-point lead (57-55). After a Scarberry free throw, WCU sophomore Marsha McGillivary hit 1-of-2 at the line to make the score 58-56 and the Catamounts would not get any closer the remainder of the game.
Western jumped out to an early 10-point lead only to have Charleston battle back late in the half. The Catamounts dominated the boards in the first half, 19-12, but only shot 39.3 percent from the field, while the Cougars were connecting on 47.4 percent of their shots.
Laura Echols led WCU with 14 first half points. The senior finished the night with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Yoneko Allen added 10 points.
Western Carolina will resume play on Saturday (Feb. 19) when it hosts conference foe Appalachian State. Game time is set for 2:00 pm. The College of Charleston will also return to league play on Saturday, hosting UNC Greensboro at 4 pm.
