WCU Women Suffer Defeat at Davidson

Davidson, N.C. - The Davidson women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack that saw four players score in double figures Monday night to beat Western Carolina, 83-59, in a Southern Conference game at Belk Arena.

Davidson (7-11, 4-6 SoCon) was led by senior guard Janna Magette with 27 points while sophomore center Meghan Bryant added 19 points. Sophomores Robyn Flewelling and Courtney Laird each added 12 points.

Laura Echols led Western Carolina (12-7, 5-6 SoCon) with 12 points and eight rebounds, with Janetta Heggins added 10 points and six assists.

Bryant scored the game's first basket and Western Carolina tied the game 15 seconds later, Davidson then put it in high gear and never looked back.

The first of Magette's six three-point baskets put Davidson ahead 9-5 with 16:26 to play in the first period. Her third three of the game put the Wildcats up 12 points, 23-11. The Catamounts would cut the lead to 10 points twice, but never got closer than 30-20. Davidson went on a 13-0 run over the next five minutes of action to build a 23-point cushion, 43-20.

Bryant converted one-of-two free throws in the final minute of the first period to make the score at intermission 44-22 in favor of Davidson.

The Wildcats came out blazing again in the second half and built the lead as high as 31 points, 61-30, before putting it in cruise control. Western Carolina put together a 20-9 run to cut the lead to 15 points, 72-57, with 3:44 to play, but were unable to make it any closer.

Individually, Bryant led the team with eight rebounds and added five blocked shots. Magette and sophomore guard Lindsay Shade each had a game-high six assists.

As a team, the Wildcats made 51.7% (31-60) of their shots from the floor, surpassing the 50% mark for the fourth straight game. Davidson was outrebounded by Western Carolina, 41-29, but forced 22 Catamount turnovers while committing just 15.

Western will step out of conference play as it returns home to host Savannah State Wednesday (Jan. 30) in the Ramsey Activity Center. Game time is set for 7 pm.
