DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team fell to Davidson Sunday afternoon,33-31, 30-26 and 30-27 in Belk Arena. With the win, the Wildcats (17-8, 10-3 SoCon) leapfrog Western (19-8, 10-4) into third place in the Southern Conference.
Ahead 29-25 in game one, the Catamounts gave up four straight points as Davidson tied it at 29-29. Then Latisha Chapman's block gave Davidson a game point at 30-29. However, WCU's Sara Komosinski leveled the game at 30 with one of her 13 kills. The two teams split the next two points before Davidson captured two in a row and the game, 33-31.
The second game was closely contested until Davidson went on a 7-1 run at 18-all. The home team extended the lead to seven at 27-20 on a Meredith Lorenz ace and held on to win, 30-26.
Davidson took the 10-2 advantage in the third game behind the serving of Julia Hueckel and Nicole Tonelli. Western Carolina clawed its way back to get as close as one on three occasions, but could never tie the score in the final game.
Komosinski and Tricia Eble paced Western Carolina with 13 kills apiece. Eleanor Talbot and Shari Harder tied for the match-high in digs with 20.
Rebecca Teichgraeber led all players with 16 putaways while Roberta Quis chipped in with 15 kills and a .333 attack percentage. Hueckel and Lorenz each had 10 putaways and a .333 hitting percentage as well.
Western Carolina next plays at Chattanooga on Wednesday, Oct. 30. That match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Davidson returns to action on Friday, Nov. 1, at home against College of Charleston. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. as well.
