Statesboro, Ga. - Western Carolina's (20-9, 11-5) volleyball team couldn't quite hold on as Georgia Southern combined for a .331 hitting percentage to outlast the Catamounts by a score of 3-1 Sunday afternoon in Hanner Fieldhouse.
Georgia Southern took game one from the Cats, 30-19. Game two was a much closer match up as Western Carolina fought back from a 24-19 deficit. A pair of kills by WCU's Tricia Eble put game two away for the Catamounts 30-28.
Two service aces by Susan Winkelman gave the Eagles a 23-9 lead in game three. A kill by Kristin Kasprak gave the Eagles game point (29-12), and Lauren McClain put the ball away for the Eagles to end game three by a score of 30-14.
The Lady Cats took a 12-10 lead in the fourth before committing a pair of hitting errors to tie the game at 12 and the two teams battled back and fourth to a 15-15 tie. A pair of kills by GSU's McClain gave the Eagles a four-point lead (21-17). Western Carolina tied the game at 27 and again at 28 until a kill by junior Erin Martin gave GSU a 29-28 lead. Western Carolina made its final push for the game when Stefanie Peters put down her final kill of the match to tie the score at 29. McClain won the serve for the Eagles with the score 30-29 and junior Martina Veiglova put the ball down to end the game 31-29.
Western Carolina's Peters and Sara Komosinski recorded double-doubles; Peters with 18 kills, 10 digs and Komosinski with 12 kills, 12 digs. Eleanor Talbot led the Catamounts defensively with 15 digs. Shari Harder posted 42 assists in the match.
Veiglova and Kim Foytich recorded double-doubles for the Eagles. Veiglova put down 22 kills and recorded 17 digs while Foytich dished out 31 assists and picked up 10 digs. Winkelman matched Foytich's 31 assists in the effort. McClain tallied 17 kills and added seven blocks to her totals.
Western Carolina is set to host Wofford Thursday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m. Georgia Southern will host UNC Greensboro Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 p.m.
