WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's basketball team was defeated by Wake Forest, 71-56 early Wednesday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Tipping off at 11:30 am for "Middle School Day", the teams played in front of a crowd of 4,786, mainly made up of area middle school children that were bussed in for the annual field trip to a Wake Forest game.
Although WFU led throughout the game, and took a 37-28 lead into halftime, the Catamounts did not quit. Western fought back and brought the score within two points (53-51) with just over five minutes to go in the game. However, the Deacons went on an 18-5 run to end the game and take the 71-56 victory.
Yoneko Allen led Western Carolina with 18 points, scoring 4-of-7 treys in the game to bump her up to sixth on WCU's all-time list with 63 career 3-point field goals made. Kala Greene also scored in double figures with 10 points. Tiffany Hamm had a team-high seven rebounds as Western outrebounded Wake Forest, 47-43. Christy Blackwell grabbed a season-high six steals
Eafton Hill led Wake Forest with 17 points with 11 rebounds, six assists and three blocks. Tonia Brown added 16 points and Tiffani Listenbee had 11. Defensively, the Deacons blocked eight Catamount shots.
Western Carolina falls to 6-2 with the loss, while Wake Forest improves to 7-1. The Catamounts return to action Friday, Dec. 20, as they host the Campbell Camels for a 7:00 pm tip-off in the RAC.
