Final Stats
Tallahassee, Fla. -
On a cold Wednesday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium, No. 1 Florida State (14-4) defeated Western Carolina (4-4) by a score of 3-0. Sophomore left-hander Trent Peterson (1-1) had an impressive outing, allowing three hits in seven scoreless innings. Peterson struck out eight and walked just one, facing 25 batters on the day. Kevin Lynch worked a scoreless eighth inning and Eric Roman finished off the Catamounts in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.
Florida State took the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded, Bryan Zech picked up an easy RBI when he was hit by a pitch.
The Seminoles added an unearned run to make it 2-0 after three innings. Nick Rogers drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt before scoring on Blair McCaleb's groundout.
In the fourth inning, the Seminoles scored the final run of the game to make it 3-0. Once again, FSU's run came across without a hit as Jerrod Brown walked with the bases loaded.
Western Carolina right-hander Jared Burton (1-2) took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits in six innings. Burton walked five and struck out seven. Offensively, four Catamounts each had a hit, including Rod Goldston, Alan Beck, Brian Sigmon and Clint Ramsey.
Mike Futrell (2-for-4, double) and Richie Smith (2-for-3, run) paced the Seminoles offensively.
Western Carolina will return to action with a three-game set versus North Carolina A&T at Childress Field. The teams will play a doubleheader at noon on Saturday, followed by a single game at 1:00 pm on Sunday.
