Final Stats
Asheville, N.C. -
Grant Rembert and Curtis Moncus hit back-to-back home runs in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader to lead UNC Asheville to a 3-2 victory over Western Carolina. In the second game, three Catamount pitchers limited the Bulldogs to three hits and earned a split with a 1-0 victory.
The first game was scoreless until the Bulldogs erupted for three runs in the fourth inning. Rembert hit a two-run homer over the right-field wall to push UNCA in front, 2-0. Two pitches later, Moncus homered to push the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0.
WCU plated a run in the fifth on an RBI-groundout by Jimmy Cochran and scored an unearned run in the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2. But reliever Gary Kohler struck out Rod Goldston to end the game with the tying run on first base.
Brad Beck earned the win for the Bulldogs by pitching five strong innings. He scattered six hits, allowed two hits, one earned and struck out three. Beck did not walk a batter to improve his record to 3-6. Brad Josey (4-2) took the loss for Western Carolina. WCU's game one starter, Dan Foley, retired the side in order in the first two innings, while Joe Camac sat down the Bulldogs in order in the third. Josey surrendered the first hit of the game in the fourth, when Matt Roberts started the fourth with a bunt single.
Goldston was 2-for-4 in game one with a pair of doubles. Catcher Brian Sigmon also had two hits for the Cats.
In the second game, Seth Foster, Brandon McDowell and Ryan Basner kept the Bulldogs at bay. Foster (7-3) allowed three hits but pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning. McDowell retired all nine batters he faced and Basner struck out two to end the game and earn his third save of the year.
The only run of the game came in the fourth inning when Dan Woodley doubled to left-center to score Sigmon.
Jason Walker (3-4) was the tough-luck loser for the Bulldogs as he pitched four strong innings and gave just five hits. He struck out four and walked one.
As he did in game one, Goldston led the way for WCU offensively, going 3-for-4. In addition to driving in the game's only run, Woodley went 2-for-3.
Western Carolina will return to action on Wednesday at the 2002 Southern Conference Championship. The Catamounts, seeded second, will face seventh-seed Wofford at 1 pm. As is has for the past five years, the SoCon Championship will be played in Charleston, S.C., at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Earlier this season, WCU defeated Wofford, 6-3 and 12-4, in a Saturday doubleheader on Mar. 16, before falling to the Terriers, 12-10, the next day.
