WCU Volleyball Claims Another Road Win, Defeating App State, 3-1

Boone, N.C. - The Western Carolina Catamount volleyball team remains undefeated and on top in the conference after beating Appalachian State Wednesday night, 3-1, at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone. The Lady Catamounts came back after losing the third game to take home the victory in the fourth, going 30-21, 30-26, 16-30, 30-18.

The Mountaineers were plagued by mistakes throughout the match. They fired a season-high eight ball handling errors on the night. They also gave up seven service errors and had 11 receiving erros.

The Catamounts (11-4, 5-0 SoCon), however, were on top of their game, posting a .435 hitting percentage in the fourth game to help them win the match, and an overall hitting percentage of .218. The team recorded 66 total digs in the match and six blocks collectively. WCU was led by Michelle Gorton and Tricia Eble who each recorded 13 kills. Shari Harder registered 42 assists during the match. Marlayna Stoetzel posted a .500 hitting percentage for night and 15 digs.

"The fact that they came back to win the match after losing the third game showed great tenacity," said head coach Angell Benson. "The crowd was very loud and distracting(during the third game) and our team really kept its focus through it all. That was very impressive."

Appalachian (7-8, 1-2 SoCon) was led by Kali Rumberger with 13 kills and 13 digs. Katherine Dean, and Stefanie Panzer added 12 kills a piece in the effort. Starla Gustafson notched 43 assists and seven digs during the match.

The Catamounts face two opponents on the road in High Point and Elon on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 12 pm and 7 pm respectively. In their next home match, the Lady Cats host Chattanooga on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7 pm.
