WCU Volleyball Coach Angell Benson Picks Up 200th Career Win With 3-0 Defeat of Davidson

Oct. 19, 2003

Final Stats

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina head volleyball coach Angell Benson, in her second year with the Catamounts, picked up her 200th career win Sunday afternoon as WCU defeated Davidson, 30-22, 30-21, 30-18. Benson, in her eighth year of coaching, has now complied a 200-92 overall record as a head coach.

The Catamounts (12-11, 5-5 SoCon) came out strong in the first game, powered by the hitting of freshman Heather Koontz who slammed down six kills on 12 attacks with no errors for a .500 hitting percentage. Senior Shari Harder led the Cats defensively with eight digs in the game, while the team tallied four blocks and held the Wildcats to a .075 attack percentage.

Davidson (10-14, 3-5) tried to rally back in the second contest, led by Liz Williamson and Latisha Chapman who each recorded four kills. However, Western turned to senior Sara Komosinski to secure the win as the middle blocker knocked down eight kills on nine attacks with no errors for a .889 hitting percentage, adding a solo block. Senior Michelle Gorton also helped contribute to the Cats' .500 attack percentage in the second by posting four kills on six attempts with no errors as well.

In the third and final game, WCU held Davidson to a -.047 hitting percentage to seal the victory. Koontz added four more kills to her total, while junior Stefanie Peters served up two consecutive aces to give Western the edge. As a team, the Catamounts tallied 10 blocks and 47 digs to dominate defensively. Komosinski led the match with 11 kills and five blocks. She now needs just two more kills to place herself in WCU's career record book. Komosinski already stands as Western's all-time leader in blocks, now with 413.

The Wildcats were led by Chapman with 10 kills, adding five digs and one block. Nicole Tonelli led the match with 12 digs. Davidson was held to just .085 hitting, 38 digs and three team blocks.

The Catamounts step away from league play Wednesday as they host Gardner-Webb at 7 pm in the Ramsey Activity Center.
