Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina volleyball head coach Angell Benson picked up her 201st career win Wednesday night over her former team, Gardner-Webb, as the Catamounts cruised to victory, 30-23, 30-28, 30-16. Western improves to 13-11 overall, while the Bulldogs drop to 6-18 with the loss.
Kellyn Thaut led the Cats to start the match as she scored on six of eight attack attempts with no errors for a .750 hitting percentage in the first game. The Cats, who got off to an 11-1 lead, held Gardner-Webb to .089 hitting to open the match, although Jenna McNeely tried to keep the Bulldogs in the game defensively with seven digs to lead the team.
In the second game, it was Michelle Gorton who stepped up to lead the Catamounts with five of eight hitting with no errors for a .625 attack percentage. She added five digs to help give Western the edge it needed to hang on for the two-point win. Despite a valiant effort by GW's Maggie Cornwall with seven kills in the game and .333 hitting as a team, the Cats proved victorious in the end.
In the third and final game, WCU dominated offensively and defensively with Sara Komosinski scooping up a team-leading seven digs to finish the match with 12 overall to lead the Cats. Thaut served up three aces to bring her point total for the match to 17 with 13 kills and two blocks on the night. Cornwall added six more kills, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs faced their greatest deficit of the match with the 30-16 loss. GW was held to -.022 hitting in the third, while WCU hit .265.
Komosinski entered the WCU record books for a second time this season. With her 10 kills in the match, she is now in fifth place on Western's all-time list with 1,356 career kills. She hit .455 for the match on 10 of 22 hitting with no errors, adding three blocks. Shari Harder also had three blocks on the night, adding 42 assists. Thaut led with 13 kills.
The Bulldogs were led by Cornwall with 17 kills, adding six digs and one block. McNeely led Gardner-Webb with 17 digs in the match.
The Catamounts return to action Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Wofford. Match time is set for 7 pm in Spartanburg.
