High Point, N.C. - High Point's Katie O'Dell scored a game-high 12 points to lead the Panthers over non-conference foe Western Carolina, 56-49, on Tuesday night in the Millis Center.
Both teams in the first half played a very tight game with six lead changes, but High Point (2-1) was able to pull ahead just over a minute left and went up five. The Panthers held the small lead and momentum going into the locker room, 33-28.
Western Carolina shot just 33 percent to High Point's 39 percent in the first 20 minutes.
The second half was more in favor of the Panthers as they never gave up the lead and at the 12:54 mark O'Dell put in a lay-up to go up as high as 10 points. Kate Jenner and Candyce Sellars also helped in the cause, finishing with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Catamounts (1-1) were led by Tiffany Hamm who had a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Christy Blackwell put in a solid game with 10 points and was 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
The Catamounts head out to Texas next as Western is set to compete in the University of Texas-San Antonio Hampton Inn Classic over the Thanksgiving holiday. The Cats will first face Denver at 5:00 pm (CST) on Friday, then square off against UTEP at 4:00 pm (CST) on Saturday.
