Final Stats

Greensboro, N.C. - The 2003 season has come to a close for Western Carolina's women's soccer team as Furman handed the Catamounts a 2-1 loss on Thursday at UNCG Soccer Stadium in the first round of the Souther Conference women's soccer championship.

"We came out to the match today with a game plan," WCU head coach Debbie Hensley said. "We executed that plan well and put ourselves in position to win, but unfortunately came up short. I'm very proud of our team's effort. I also want to commend our five seniors who had an excellent final performance. They made Western Carolina proud."

The top-seeded Lady Paladins took the lead midway through the first half when Danielle Petro knocked in a loose ball after her first shot was blocked. Furman held the 1-0 lead through intermission.

Andre'a Morrison extended Furman's lead to 2-0 at the 75:09 mark as she took a Katharine Kelley pass and shot from 15 yards out. Her shot was deflected by a Western Carolina defender into the net. The Cats battled back to pull within one as Lauren Bramlett's free kick found the back of the net at the 81:53 mark, making the score 2-1 in favor of Furman.

"I commend Western Carolina and head coach Debbie Hensley," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "They came out and played hard and were a completely different team than they showed earlier this year in Greenville."

Catamount keeper Tina Weaver picked up six saves in the match with the team adding one, while Furman's Andie Hinshaw posted three saves for the day.

Western Carolina concludes its season at 7-11-2 with a 4-7-0 league record.
