Final Stats
Birmingham, Ala. - The Catamount volleyball team continued their winning ways early Saturday morning as Western Carolina plowed through Alabama-Birmingham, 30-25, 30-25, 30-16, at the Union State Bank/Samford Invitational. The win gave WCU a 5-3 record, while UAB dropped to 2-7.
Freshman Kellyn Thaut led the Cats with 11 kills in the match on 28 total attacks. She added 12 digs on the defensive end along with teammate Ellie Talbot, who also had 12. Senior Sara Komosinski posted a game-high 14.5 points on nine kills, a team-high three aces and four blocks (one solo, three assisted).
While both teams posted six team blocks, Western out-hit the Blazers .222 to .032 and recorded more assists (40-26) as well as more digs (54-43). The Catamounts held UAB to a -.294 hitting percentage in the third game to claim the victory.
WCU completes its tournament play for the weekend against South Alabama at 3 pm (CST) Saturday before returning home to host region rival UNC Asheville on Tuesday.
