Behind the double-double effort of senior captain Stefanie Peters, the Western Carolina volleyball team swept the visiting Wofford Terriers 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-19) Tuesday night in Southern Conference action in the Ramsey Activity Center.
Peters led all scorers with 11 kills for the Cats, who improve to 7-10 overall, 3-5 in Southern Conference play. Wofford (6-13, 2-4) was paced by senior Katie Laser, who recorded nine kills for the Terriers.
In the first game, Western raced out to a 10-2 advantage before Wofford could recover. The Terriers would bounce back, pulling to within one at 13-12 on a Laser kill. The Catamounts regrouped, however, capitalizing on several Wofford errors to claim the early advantage, 1-0, with the 30-25 victory.
Game two opened with the Terriers taking an early 3-0 lead before the Cats rallied. WCU was able to pull even at 10 apiece on a attack error by Wofford sophomore, Christal Carey. The miscue ignited an 11-4 Catamount run prompting a Terrier timeout with the score standing 20-14 in favor of the home squad. The spurt included three Western service aces, two by sophomore Meghan Boyle and one by Melissa Parana. After the break, the Cat attack was slowed but not stopped as WCU finished off the game on a Wofford attack error to take the 2-0 lead, 30-22.
In game three, Peters and Parana tallied back-to-back solo blocks to help Western Carolina race to an 11-5 lead. The Cats then capitalized on 12 attack errors that limited the Terriers to a -.079 attack percentage to close out the match with the 30-19 win.
Junior Ellie Talbot tallied a match-high 16 digs for the Catamounts, while Peters added 13 to accompany her 11 total kills. Sophomore Kellyn Thaut and freshman Meredith Harmon both poured in eight kills apiece, with Thaut adding nine digs as well. Harmon once again led the Catamounts in blocking, finishing with a pair of solo stops and one assist. The Cats held a 6-2 advantage in total blocks on the evening.
WCU's sophomore setters Boyle and Kate Willard split time setting up Catamount attackers, recording 15 and 14 assists, respectively.
Wofford's Rhea DeJesus, who came into the match ranked third in the SoCon in assists per game, finished with 27 and nine digs defensively. Junior Angela Berry finished with half a dozen kills and the Terrier's lone solo block on the night.
Western Carolina returns continues their current homestand this Friday, October 15 as the Furman Paladins come to Cullowhee for a 7:00 pm match in the Ramsey Activity Center.
