Western Carolina women's volleyball team ran into the red-hot College of Charleston Cougars, falling in straight sets, 3-0 (30-20, 30-18, 30-17) Friday night. The win extended the College's winning streak to five matches and improved their record to 12-5 overall, 5-1 in the Southern Conference. The Catamounts fell to 6-9 on the season, 2-4 in league play.
The win marked the 31st consecutive home conference victory for the Cougars in the friendly confines of the Johnson Center.
In the first game, the Cougars took the lead early and never let go. With the score 22-18, CofC scored five-straight points on Kaycie Carr serves to jump ahead 27-18. A kill by Rebecca Wieters gave the Cougars a 30-20 win.
Game two was a lot like the first as CofC jumped out to a 10-3 lead behind two kills from both Wieters and Tiffany Blum. The Cougars controlled the rest of the game and finally put it away with a kill from Becca Shaw off of a nice assists by Sarah Voss.
In game three, the Cougars utilized the serve of Sara Davis as the squad scored five straight points to take 13-4 lead. A timeout by the Catamounts stopped the Charleston run. However, out of the break, the Cats were unable to get anything going. The Cougars ended the match on a Wieters kill, her ninth of the evening.
The Cougar attack was led by Kaycie Carr's 37 assists. In addition to her match-high 15 kills, Davis contributed eight digs for Charleston. Megan Parkerson had 12 digs to lead the Cougars.
Western was led by junior Ellie Talbot's 14 digs, with senior Stefanie Peters and junior Robyn Everly pouring in seven a piece. Freshman Melissa Parana finished with eight kills to lead the Cats' offense while sophomore setter Kate Willard contributed 12 assists in the loss.
Western Carolina returns home to face The Citadel this Sunday, October 10th to wrap-up the busy Hall of Fame weekend. The match is slated to begin at 2:00 PM at the Ramsey Center. WCU holds a commanding 11-1 series record over the Bulldogs with the only loss coming in a non-conference meeting. The College of Charleston will travel to Boone, N.C. for a Sunday match with SoCon North Division leader Appalachian State at 1:00 PM.
