Western Carolina junior Keith Tyburski fired a career-low 68 and is in a three-way tie for first, helping the Catamounts stand in second place the WCU Intercollegiate, played at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Charleston Southern's Shawn Hall also turned in a four-under 68, being one of five Pirates to shoot par or better, as CSU leads the way with a seven-under 281 team score through 18 holes.
Tyburski's 68 is five strokes better than his previous best 18 holes and his 68 ranks fifth (tied) on the WCU all-time, 18-hole list. Fellow junior Blake Wray carded a two-under 70, his best round of the fall season, and stands in a tie for sixth. Sophomore Tripp Morrow and Matt Flueckiger each turned in rounds of 74, while Chase Kress shot an 80 on day one, as Western ended the day two-under par with a 286. The 286 stands as the third-best, 18-hole score in WCU history.
Playing as an individual, Catamount senior Brian Hogan was one stroke off the leaders, shooting a three-under 69.
Joining Tyburski and Hall in the three-way tie for first is Lipscomb's Jonathan Beck, who also fired a 68. Radford's Aaron Summers is tied with Western's Hogan for fourth, as each shot 69.
Charleston Southern had all five of its golfers finish among the top 13. Including Hall, Paul Reed is tied for sixth (70) and Conor O'Shea is tied for eighth (71), while Rashid Salem and Paul Gagliardi each shot 72 to tie for 13th. Western Carolina is six strokes behind the Pirates with its 286, while Radford and The Citadel came in at 292 (3rd) and 293 (4th), respectively.
The annual even will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
