Butcher was tied for 27th, overcoming a double-bogey on his third hole of the day with five birdies over his next seven holes. A bogey on the par-3 17th left him at 2-under, where he played even over the final seven holes of his first round.
Senior

The leaders were two clear of fourth-place Grand Canyon (274), with No. 42 San Diego in fifth place, five strokes off the pace at 277.
When the teams were chased from the course by darkness, USC held a three-stroke lead over a two-way tie between Arkansas State and Grand Canyon, with Iowa State slipping to fourth and UTEP undermining San Diego into fifth.
Matthew Diehl of GCU and ISU's Paul Beauvy (#144) were tied for the lead through 18 holes with matching scores of 8-under par 64, with GCU's Nixon Lauritzen a stroke back in third as the Lopes occupied two-thirds of the podium.
