Bermuda Run, N.C. – Western Carolina's
Tyler Jones battled through a tough second round on Tuesday at the NCAA Winston-Salem Regional, matching Monday's trio of birdies on the front nine but carding four bogeys and one double-bogey in turning in a 3-over par 74 at the par-71, 7,013-yard Bermuda Run Country Club. Jones slipped into a six-way tie for 25th overall with a two-round score of 1-under par, 141.
No. 3 Virginia extended its lead over a two-way tie between No. 10 Ole Miss and No. 15 Pepperdine, 541- 547. The Rebels carded a low round of 269 to move into the runner-up gridlock. No. 39 Mississippi State is fourth, nine strokes off the pace at 550, with No. 28 Southern California (557) rounding out the top five, five strokes ahead of hard-charging NC State (562) for the final transfer spot.
Kentucky's Jacob Lang advanced 14 positions into the individual qualifying spot with a two-day total of 8-under par. Entering the final round, approximately 10 golfers, including Jones, are in contention to advance to the NCAA Championship.
Jones birdied the par-4 No. 2 to move to 1-under par through the first three holes on Tuesday. However, a pair of missed putts that would have given him par on the par-5 fourth relegated him to 1-over par after a double-bogey. The Jacksonville, N.C., product rebounded with his second birdie on the par-5 sixth to stand at even-par a third of the way through his day.
Back-to-back bogeys on holes No. 7 and No. 8 left him at 2-over par before a third birdie had him making the turn for home at 1-over for the day.
After shooting 1-under par on the back nine Monday, Jones carded seven pars and a pair of bogeys to shoot 2-over-par and plus-3 on the day at 74. He is tied for 17th overall with eight combined birdies through 36 holes, carding 22 combined pars.
