Tyler Jones Finishes Tied for 37th at NCAA Winston-Salem Regional

Redshirt sophomore closed a strong first season for the Catamounts

Bermuda Run, N.C. – Western Carolina redshirt sophomore Tyler Jones closed the NCAA Men's Golf Winston-Salem Regional on Wednesday, carding a 2-over par round of 73, to finish the three-day event in a tie for 37th in his first appearance in the postseason event. Jones posted rounds of 4-under par 67, 3-over par 74, and 2-over par 73 in the final round for a 54-hole score of 214.

Jones countered six bogeys with four birdies in the final round, giving him 12 combined birdies at the postseason tournament. His finish is the fourth-best by a Catamount at an NCAA regional all-time, between three players, joining JT Poston and Matt Cook.

On Wednesday, Jones opened his final round at 1-over par through three holes with a bogey on the par-4 second, before moving to 1-under par with birdies on a pair of par 5's on the 509-yard fourth and a birdie for a third straight day on the 588-yard sixth. However, a second bogey on the ninth relegated him to even-par for the turn towards home.

Jones played his final nine holes of the season at 2-over par, countering four bogeys with two more birdies. Three of his final four holes were shot at 1-over with a trio of bogeys and a birdie.

No. 3 Virginia and No. 15 Pepperdine finished the 54-hole event tied atop the leaderboard with matching scores of 36-under par 816, five strokes ahead of No. 10 Ole Miss in third. No. 28 Southern California was nine strokes off the pace in fourth at 825, with No. 39 Mississippi State rounding out the top five transfer spots for the NCAA Championship.

UVA's Ben James won the individual medalist by three strokes over Cameron Tankersley of Ole Miss, 194 to 197. Jacob Lang of Kentucky finished tied for fifth individually with a score of 204, the top individual not on one of the top finishing teams to advance to the national championship event.
