After claiming a 3-2 come-from-behind win last night at Chattanooga, the tables were turned on Western Carolina one day later, falling 3-2 (30-24, 25-30, 30-20, 22-30, 15-4) at East Tennessee State Saturday afternoon. The Bucs improved to 2-10, 1-1 in Southern Conference play. The loss sends the Catamounts to 4-6, 1-1 in conference action for the year.
Leading the way for the Bucs was Jennifer Sartor who tallied 16 kills and a .325 hitting percentage in the win. Kellyn Thaut led the Catamounts with career-high 30 kills hitting .371 with 16 digs for the match.
The ETSU offense posted a strong first game hitting .289 with 15 kills and three total blocks for the game. Led by Sartor with five kills, setter Brittany Kessel posted a strong first game performance with 13 assists and three digs in the win.
The Catamounts came out firing in game two where Thaut took over on the offensive side of the net leading the way for WCU with seven kills and a .313 hitting percentage for the game. The Lady Bucs defense posted four total blocks compared to three by WCU, however the Catamounts took game two with a tally of 30-25.
The Lady Bucs dominated game three taking the commanding lead early and winning 30-20. Outside hitter Sara Scandiffio led ETSU with five kills adding one block assist for the game. The Lady Bucs also dominated from the service stripe where they added four aces for the game. An offensive let down in game four by ETSU allowed the Catamounts to even the match at 2-2 with a 30-22 win. ETSU hit just .229 for the game compared to the .395 of WCU, while both teams fell short with zero blocks for the game.
Joining Thaut in leading the Catamounts were setter Meghan Boyle, who posted 51 assists and 20 digs, and Heather Koontz with 10 kills. The Lady Bucs posted nine aces against six by the Catamount offense while defensively ETSU tallied eight total blocks compared to five by WCU. Callie Kiselich and Scandiffio posted 14 kills each while senior Karen Freeburg tallied 11 kills and 20 digs in the win.
WCU will face Gardner-Webb on Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m. for their next competition.
