Catamount Volleyball Drops Two at Clemson

Clemson, S.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team dropped two matches Friday afternoon at the Clemson Invitational. First, the Catamounts were edged by The Citadel, 3-2, in a non-conference meeting. Then, Western had a rematch with Clemson, who faced each other two nights ago, with the Tigers once again claiming a 3-0 decision at Jervey Gym.

In the Cats' first game, The Citadel won each of the first two games, 30-26 and 30-28. Western rallied in the third and fourth games, 30-25 and 30-16, to forced a fifth and final game. The Bulldogs won the race to 15 (15-12) to win what their first match of the season. The Catamounts fell to 0-2 after the morning match.

The Citadel had four players in double figures in kills, including 17 each by Audra Ritchie and Samantha Parasi. Parasi added 13 digs for a double-double, while Stefanie Farris had a double-double as well with 12 kills and a match-high 21 digs.

For the Catamounts, Stefanie Peters led the way with 18 kills and 16 digs. Heather Koontz added 10 kills, while Kate Willard had 16 digs and Ellie Talbot had 15.

In the afternoon, Clemson (2-0) swept the Catamounts with scores of 30-14, 30-20 and 30-22. The Tigers had two stretches off reeling off seven straight points during the match. Lori Ashton and Brittany Ross each had 15 kills for Clemson while Leslie Finn had a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Finn added two service aces as she helped the Tigers during one of their seven-point runs.

Kellyn Thaut just missed a double-double for Western, registering 11 kills and nine digs. Peters and Talbot added 13 digs.

Play resumes at the Clemson Invitational on Saturday as Western Carolina will face nationally-ranked Northern Iowa at 11:30 am before rounding out the event with a 4:00 pm meeting with Winthrop.
