WCU Golf Charges to Sixth at SoCon Championships

Davidson, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's golf team fired a 291 on day two, the lowest score by six strokes for the day, to move up four spots to sixth at the 2005 Southern Conference Championships, played at River Run Country Club. Also, two Catamounts, sophomore Tripp Morrow and senior Chase Kress, tied for low round by an individual as each posted a one-under 71.

Morrow moved fro 20th after round one up to a tie for fifth with his one-under 71 today. His two-day total of 148 is eight strokes off the lead. Kress, playing in his final event as a Catamount, made the move from 29th to 10th with his 71. Kress cut off eight stokes from his first 18 holes and has 149 for two days. Freshman teammate Matt Cook turned in an even par round of 72, despite taking two triple bogeys on Monday. Cook, who was 20th after 18 holes, moved into a tie for 10th with his 149 for 36 holes.

Blake Wray and Matt Dowdy also showed improvement on Monday, each shaving five strokes off their day one round. Wray, who shot 77, is tied for 44th (159), while Dowdy is in 48th (161).

Western Carolina moved into the thick of the race for the 2005 title as day one lead Davidson only managed a 302 on day two. However, the Wildcats were able to maintain their lead with a 36-hole total of 594, followed by Chattanooga (595), East Tennessee State (595), UNC Greensboro (598) and Georgia Southern (600).
