Clemson pounded out 17 hits, including three each by Taylor Harbin and Travis Storrer, to hand Western Carolina a 10-1 setback Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers improve to 23-14, while the Catamounts fall to 21-16.
Clemson took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. After a leadoff triple by Storrer, Andy D'Alessio delivered a two-run home run to left field, his seventh blast of the season. The Tigers padded their advantage in the third, scoring two runs. After a leadoff bunt single by Harbin, Tyler Colvin doubled down the right field line to score Harbin. Kris Harvey followed with an RBI double of his own.
In the fourth, Clemson tacked on two more runs. Adrian Casanova started the inning by being hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt, Chalk singled, moving Casanova to third and. Chalk stole second and Harbin plated the two runners with a double down the left field line.
The Tigers took advantage of some Catamount miscues to score a run in the bottom of the sixth and take a 7-0 lead. Herman Demmink had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a balk. He avoided being picked off on second, escaping a run down, and would score on a Harbin single. In the eighth, Clemson used a pair of walks and RBI singles Gene Pierce, Storrer and Tanner Leggett to go up 10-0.
The Cats avoided their first shutout to Clemson for the first time since 1992, scoring once in the ninth. Jared Greenwood had a single, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a Trey McDaniel sacrifice fly.
Clemson's starting pitcher, P.J. Zocchi, picked up the win his first outing of the season. He pitched the first two innings and allowed a hit and a walk with a strikeout. Western's Steven Strausbaugh, who was getting his first career start, suffered the loss, allowing four hits, two runs and a walk in two innings pitched.
Western Carolina will return to action this weekend, hosting Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern. The first game of the series will be Friday (April 22) at 7:00 pm at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium.
