Final Stats

Spartanburg, S.C. - Four Catamounts collected three hits each and one of those players, Jared Greenwood, drove in four as Western Carolina defeated Wofford, 10-3, in game one of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Russell C. King Field.

In addition to Greenwood, Chris Davis, Tim Hallam and Jonathan Greene each had three hits, while Trey McDaniel added two. Brian Barnes got the win and improved to 4-2 on the year. He only pitched five innings, being on a pitch count, allowing just four hits and one run with no walks and five strikeouts.

Western broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the third. Davis had a two-out hit and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hallam followed with a single to right. Wofford outfielder Ben Austin had a strong throw to the plate, but Davis was able to slide around the tag at home to put the Cats up 1-0. Two pitches later, Greenwood launched his seventh home run of the season over the right field fence.

Wofford answered with a run in the bottom of the third. Bradford Eaves sent the first pitch he saw down the left field line and scored two batters later on a double by Anthony DiNardo.

The Cats pushed their advantage to 6-1 in the fifth. Consecutive hits by Davis (double), Hallam (bunt) and Greenwood (single) enabled Western to score its fourth run. Then a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt, allowed Hallam to score and put Greenwood on third. Steven Strausbaugh plated Greenwood with a sacrifice fly to center. While Strausbaugh had the RBI, he did have his ht streak snapped at 19 games as he went 0-for-4 on the day.

With two outs in the sixth, Davis delivered an RBI single to right-center to drive in Greene, who reached on a single earlier in the inning. After a Hallam single, Greenwood put runners on the corners with an RBI single up the middle, chasing Terrier starter Austin Redwine (8-7) and giving Western an 8-1 cushion through five and a half innings.

Western kept the momentum in the seventh, scoring two runs on two hits and a Terrier error. McDaniel and Greene had consecutive one-out hits and the bases became loaded when Grey Gregory reached on an error. Brandon Zollman walked to force a run across and Davis followed with an RBI ground out.

The Terriers made some noise in the bottom of the ninth, scoring twice, but to no avail as Western's Bryan Tupper closed out the game, pitching the final 4.0 innings, to earn his first save of the season.

For the Terriers, DiNardo went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

Western and Wofford will wrap up the 2005 regular season with game two of the doubleheader this afternoon.
