Cullowhee, N.C. -
The Western Carolina women's tennis team could not capitalize on the positive momentum gained with two wins over spring break, falling at Davidson on Saturday as the Wildcats ran their dual winning streak to five straight with the 7-0 victory at the Covington Courts.
With the triumph, the Wildcats' remain unbeaten at their friendly confines on the season and have won 19 of their last 20 home affairs as they improve to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the league. The Catamounts fall to 2-9 and 0-3 in SoCon competition.
After Western Carolina conceded the number three doubles position by default, the Wildcats needed just one more victory to assure the point, but they swept the top two spots to grab an early, 1-0, advantage after doubles play.
Despite adding Carley Abbott to the roster to try and fill the void left by the absence of senior Katherine Ptak, Western conceded the number six singles match, giving Davidson a second point to lead 2-0.
The Wildcats rolled through the remaining singles matches, winning each in straight sets and not allowing more than two points in a single frame. Five of the sets were claimed via shutout. Yet, the aforementioned Abbott contested the fifth flight in singles play, marking the first time this season WCU has been able to field more than the top four.
Western Carolina will remain on the road to battle the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday morning at 10:00 am.
