WCU Men's Golf Places 8th; Matt Cook Was Runner-Up at Wofford

Spartanburg, S.C. - Western Carolina sophomore Matt Cook turned in an even par 72 and a three-round score of 217 to finish one stroke out of first place and lead the Catamounts, who turned in a 54-hole score of 918, to an eighth-place finish at the Wofford Invitational, presented by Vault, played at the Carolina Country Club.

Cook, the Southern Conference leader in scoring average, registered his sixth top five of the season, including all four events this spring, and was the top finisher among the SoCon competitors. The Murphy native led the 60-person field with 13 birdies over 54 holes, while his six-under on the par 5's was second-best in the field.

Blake Wray and Matt Flueckiger both tied for 22nd, each carding a 54-hole score of 230 as both turned in 79's on the final round. Wray was one of just 12 players to record an eagle in the tournament and Flueckiger tied for second in the field with 35 pars over 54 holes. Tripp Morrow and Brian Hogan rounded out Western's quintet. Morrow had a three-round total of 241 to place 50th, while Hogan's score of 253 was 59th.

Charleston Southern took home both team and individual medalist honors. The Buccaneers fired an 899, three strokes better than host team Wofford. CSU's Shawn Hall carded a one-under 71 to edge Cook for individual honors. Wofford's Neil O'Briain, who led going into the final round, shot a 76 to finish one stroke behind Cook.

The Catamounts will return to action April 16-18 at the 2006 Southern Conference Championships, played at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C.
