The Western Carolina volleyball team dropped its opener in the Comfort Inn Invitational to host Morehead State in straight sets, 3-0 (30-27, 30-21, 30-26) Friday evening at Wetherby Gym.
Western (1-8) was led by eight kills from junior Meredith Harmon, who only committed two errors on 20 total attempts for a team-high .300 attack percentage. The Villa Hills, Ky., native also added a team-high four total blocks, including a pair of solo stops. Freshman Brittny Johnson equaled Harmon's block total with four of her own.
Senior Heather Koontz recorded six kills in the loss to rank second on the squad, while freshman libero Liz Rondone led the team defensively with 11 digs. Rondone's classmate, setter Katie Hennessey, dished out 16 assists and was second on the team with eight digs in the losing effort.
The Catamounts return to action on Saturday morning at 10:00 am against the United States Air Force Academy before concluding tournament play at 4:30 pm against Central Arkansas.
