Oct. 19, 2007

Box Score

BOONE, N.C. - Jelena Jakovljevic's 14 kills was the third straight game the freshman outside hitter has recorded double figure kills. Her solid performance wasn't enough to propel Western Carolina's volleyball team (7-19, 2-9 SoCon) to a victory as the Catamounts fell to Appalachian State (11-12, 7-3 SoCon) 3-0 (19-30, 27-30, 14-30) Friday.

Western Carolina had its strongest performance in game two. Tying the game early, the Catamounts soon found themselves in a hole, down 16-10, but battled back by going on an 8-2 run to pull within two, 18-16. The Catamounts were aided in their mini run thanks to a trio of errors by Appalachian State, two huge kills by Jakovljevic and a servce ace by Katie Hennessey. The Catamounts kept pushing and tied the game at 22 on a kill by Jakovljevic and knotted it again at 23 thanks to a Mountaineer error but Appalachian State quickly reclaimed the lead when Western Carolina committed a service error. Appalachian State pulled ahead and took the game on some timely kills and Catamount miscues.

For the match, Appalachian State soared with a .308 attack percentage while Western Carolina had just a .042 attack percentage. The Mountaineers also recorded eight total team blocks and the Catamounts had five.

Next to Javoljevic's double-figure performance Meredith Harmon had the next best performance in the match. The senior middle blocker had seven kills and two solo blocks.

Western Carolina returns to action on Saturday facing Davidson at 2 p.m.
