CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Katie Hennesseey's fifth triple double of the season, and second consecutive, helped lead the Western Carolina volleyball team (8-20, 3-10 SoCon) to a 3-1 (30-27, 32-30, 28-30, 30-19) victory over Wofford (9-16, 2-10 SoCon) Wednesday at the Ramsey Center.
Hennessey had another outstanding performance and also set a career mark in the match. The 5-11 setter recorded 10 kills, 38 assists and a career-high 22 digs.
Sophomore libero Liz Rondone also set a mark for herself in the match. The Bloomington, Ill. Native reached the 30-dig mark for the second time this season with a total of 32 digs.
The win had a two fold effect for the Catamounts. The victory over the Terriers kept Western Carolina in the hunt for a top-eight finish in the Southern Conference and a possible invitation to the tournament. It also halted an eight-game losing skid and gave the Catamounts its eighth victory of the season, tying the number of wins the club attained in 2006.
Western Carolina also kept its streak alive against Wofford, as the Catamounts are now 10-0 in matches played in Cullowhee. Overall, the club is 20-3 all-time against Wofford.
The Catamounts also had a successful night in the serve department. Western Carolina took the game out of Wofford's hands in key situations with a season-high 15 aces. Individually, freshman Jelena Jakovljevic notched a season-high six aces in the match.
Overall, Jakovljevic logged in a match-high 18 kills and also had 13 digs for the second double-double of her career. She also had four blocks.
Speaking of double-doubles, freshman sensation Ali Rook tallied her sixth double-double of the season. The 5-11 outside hitter had 12 kills and 10 digs. Senior Meredith Harmon rounded out players with double figure kills with 12.
Western Carolina ended the match with a .170 attack percentage. The Catamounts had a season-high 60 digs as a team and also notched a season-high 106 digs in the match.
The Catamounts return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday hosting Georgia Southern. It is Meredith Harmon Day in honor of Western Carolina's lone senior for 2007.
