CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina volleyball made the most of its final home game of the season going out with a bang, by upsetting Furman (19-7, 12-4) 3-1 (30-24, 24-30, 30-25, 30-25) Tuesday in the Ramsey Center. With the victory, the Catamounts improve to 9-22 on the season but more importantly get their fourth (4-12) Southern Conference victory of the year. With two matches remaining, WCU still has a chance to make the eight-team Southern Conference Championships which will be held November 16-18 in Chattanooga.
The Catamounts had four players record double figure kills in the match. Senior Meredith Harmon led both teams with 17 kills on just three errors for a .452 attack percentage. She also had two solo blocks and five block assists.
Katie Hennessey continues to rack up big numbers as the sophomore setter tallied her fifth triple double, and seventh of her career, of the season. She ended the contest with Furman with 11 kills, 38 assists and 11 digs.
Freshman outside hitter Jelena Jakovljevic ranked second on the team in kills in the match with 15. She also had eight digs and two block assists.
Fellow freshman LaTonia Cunningham also had a big game with 11 kills against Furman. She also had a blocked shot and four block assists.
Western Carolina opened the game with intensity and fire. The Catamounts had Furman on its heels from the opening match as the club hit .282 in game one and committed just four errors.
Overall, the Catamounts hit .258 in the match and also recorded seven service aces. Freshman Ali Rook accounted for four of the service aces in the match.
Western Carolina's victory marks its ninth win of the season, besting its win total of eight from the 2006 season. The team also had nine victories in 2005.
The Catamounts complete their regular season on the road. Western Carolina will travel to Elon on Saturday to face the Phoenix at 2 p.m. The two clubs will be participating in Dig For a Cure - to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation as each team hopes to raise $1,000. Individual sponsors pledge money per dig earned by their team in the match, or can make a flat donation to the cause. The money raised by each team goes directly to the Komen Foundation's local affiliate in their community.
