CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina volleyball (5-12, 1-2 SoCon) fell 3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-25) to Southern Conference foe Appalachian State (4-9, 1-0 SoCon) Friday in front of a crowd of 445 fans at the Ramsey Center.
The Catamounts were paced by outside hitter Jelena Jakovjevic who had eight kills but the freshman also committed seven attack errors. Sophomore Amanda Kerr had six kills and just one attack error and freshman Ali Rook had six kills and eight digs. Senior middle blocker Meredith Harman had a slow start but ended the match with seven kills, three digs and two block assists.
Western Carolina kept it close early in all three games but couldn't overcome Appalachian States streak of runs in each of the three games.
A kill by LaTonia Cunningham in game one put the score at 9-7 but the Catamounts couldn't pull any closer. In game two there were two lead changes and four ties in game three there was also two lead changes and three ties.
The Catamounts had 31 kills in the match but committed 25 errors for a .046 attack percentage. Western Carolina was also plagued by six service errors, eight reception errors and had just one service ace.
Appalachian State hit .165 in the match and recorded eight service aces. The club also had 11 total blocks.
Sophomore setter Katie Hennessey had 25 assists in the match and fellow sophomore Liz Rondone had 26 digs.
Western Carolina volleyball returns to action on Saturday hosting Davidson at 2 p.m. in the Ramsey Center.
