RALEIGH, N.C. - Western Carolina volleyball (0-9) had some solid individual performances from freshman Brittany Lysik and junior Amanda Kerr, before falling to host NC State 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 19-25, 19-25) and William & Mary 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 19-25) Saturday as part of the Hilton/RTP NC State Classic in Reynolds Coliseum.

The Catamounts started off strong against the host Wolfpack, taking game one 25-14. WCU built a 13-5 advantage off the strong serving of Carrie Minogue and Katie Hennessey as NC State had four attack errors in the tandems serving sets.

It was the strong play of Lysik that kept Western Carolina in the game as she recorded the first double-double of her career with 10 kills and 12 digs. The Catamounts won game one, the first time this season the club has won the opening game of a match, but NC State battled back to win games two and three to take a 2-1 advantage.

Down 11-20, the Wolfpack looked like they would easily put the Catamounts away but WCU fought back in game four with three straight points to pull within six, but NC State pulled out with the win.

Hennessey had 34 assists in the match and junior libero Liz Rondone had 21 digs.

In the second match of the day, Western Carolina was shutout by William & Mary but did leave with a pair of highlights by individual players. Junior Amanda Kerr notched a career-high 13 kills in the match and earned All-Tournament honoros while Lysik extended her streak of double figure digs to three with 14 against William & Mary.

Though Western Carolina was shutout, the club kept the matches close which is a positive note for the Catamounts as they prepare to host their first match of the season at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 against mountain rival UNC Asheville.
