CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina volleyball (3-17, 0-6 SoCon) hung tough with Samford (11-7, 5-0 SoCon) on Saturday, in historic Reid Gym, but fell to the Bulldogs 3-0 (23-25, 13-25, 21-25).
The Catamounts strung together a tough performance in the first set of the match. Tied at 18 and then at 20, Western Carolina was down 21-20 off a miscue. However, the club fought back to tie it at 21 off a Samford service error. Samford outscored Western Carolina 4-3 in the final points to take the first set.
The second set was all Samford as the Bulldogs went on the attack, winning 25-13. In set three, Western Carolina won the first five points of the set before Samford battled back. Tied at 19, Samford took the lead for good off a kill by Elizabeth Neisler.
Junior Kara Lynzee Brooks led the club with six kills. Senior setter Katie Hennessey had 17 assists and libero Liz Rondone added 12 digs.
Western Carolina returns to action on Sunday hosting Chattanooga. Match time is set for 3 p.m. in the Ramsey Center.
