DAVIDSON, N.C. - For the second match in a row, Western Carolina volleyball (3-20, 0-9 SoCon) pushed its opponent to five games before falling. The Catamounts lost to Davidson (5-20, 2-7) 3-2 Friday.
Head Coach Manuel Concepcion played just six players in the match against the Wildcats. Those six players pushed Davidson to the limit before relenting.
After dropping the first set. Western Carolina battled back to take the second 25-20 to earn a split before the half.
"They played very well today," Concepcion said. "Our defense was spectacular in the front and the back row."
Senior setter Katie Hennessey captained the court dishing out 43 assists and also logging in 14 digs. Her efforts allowed Paloma Alvarez and Rebecca Stoltz to have 14 and 12 digs respectively.
"Katie stepped it up tonight and led the way for most of our hitters to have a solid match," Concepcion said. "We just broke in serve receive and that allowed Davidson to keep us from attacking the way we can."
Western Carolina took a 2-1 lead by taking the third set. Tied at 14, the Catamounts took the lead off a service ace by Alvarez. They never trailed again. Davidson tied the match winning the fourth set and then dominated the fifth for the win.
Western Carolina will play at Georgia Southern on Sunday. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
