GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior Amanda Kerr posted a season-high 17 kills in Western Carolina volleyball's 3-1 loss to UNC Greensboro Sunday. The Catamounts fall to 3-15 and 0-4 in the SoCon while the Spartans improve to 9-9 and 2-2 in the SoCon.
It was a promising beginning for Western Carolina as the Catamounts opened the match by winning the first set to take an early 1-0 lead. Tied at 18 it was serving by both teams that led to WCU's victory. UNCG had a service error to give the Catamounts a 19-18 advantage and then a pair of service aces by Western Carolina's Sara Gantt gave WCU a three point boost, 21-18. Three kills by Kerr were key plays in giving Western Carolina the win in set one.
"We had a great beginning against UNCG, improving our sideout percentage," said Head Coach Manuel Concepcion. "We just couldn't hold on."
UNC Greensboro took over in the ensuing sets holding Western Carolina to negative and .000 attack percentage in the second and third sets. Meanwhile the Spartans closed out the match hitting above .300 in the final two sets.
Along with senior Kerr, fellow seniors Liz Rondone and Katie Hennessey had solid performances as well. Rondone had her first back-to-back 20 dig performances of the season with 25 and Hennessey logged in 36 assists. Sophomore Gantt also had double digit digs with 11.
"Our back row defense was tremendous again in this match," Concepcion said. "The team is playing with more confidence we just need to be consistent in our improvement."
After over a month on the road, Western Carolina finally returns home on Wednesday. The club hosts its first home Southern Conference match welcoming Furman for a 7 p.m. match in the Ramsey Center.
