Mocs Upend Catamounts on Senior Day

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina volleyball team fell in three sets to Chattanooga on senior day Sunday afternoon at the Ramsey Center. The match was the final home contest for senior Paloma Alvarez.

WCU dropped the first set by a score of 25-13 before losing set two 25-20. Chattanooga captured set three, 25-13.

Sophomore Amanda Chaparro paced the Catamount offense for the second consecutive match as she recorded a match-high 13 kills. Alvarez added four kills and freshman Kelcie Randazzo added a team-high 18 assists.

Defensively, freshman Morgan Cochran posted a team-high 14 digs while Randazzo chipped in eight and Alvarez contributed seven.

The Catamounts led 7-4 to open the first set before the Mocs scored 11 consecutive points to take a six-point advantage. An Alvarez kill and a service ace by junior Carrie Minogue brought the set within four (13-9), but Chattanooga went on a 9-2 run, taking a 22-11 lead. The Mocs score three of the final five points of the set to win, 25-13.

After trailing by five (6-1) at the beginning of set two, WCU went on a 6-1 run to tie the set at seven. The Catamounts got with one (11-10) before the Mocs went on a 10-5 run to push their advantage to 21-15. A 4-2 run got WCU back within four (23-19), but Chattanooga scored two of the final three points on kills by Meagan Ernd and Christina Teter to take the set, 25-20.

WCU led 3-2 to open set three before the Mocs went on a 10-4 run to take a five-point lead (12-7) and force a Catamount timeout. Chattanooga used an 11-4 run to make the score 23-11. Back-to-back points by the Catamounts got the set within 10 (23-13), but the Mocs took the match on a kill by Courtney Barnes and a WCU attacking error – winning the set 25-13.

The Catamounts return to action on Nov. 12 at UNC Greensboro, followed by a match at Elon on Nov. 13.
