WCU Women's Tennis Drops Match to Appalachian State, 6-1

Boone, N.C. - Western Carolina dropped its match, 6-1, to rival Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Carolina Lainez picked up the lone win in singles action as the Mountaineers (9-11, 2-6 SoCon) snapped the Catamounts' (3-12, 1-7 SoCon) win streak in conference action.

ASU won the doubles point as Ellie Linsell and Olivia Stannard downed Amanda Massey and Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz, 8-1. WCU bounced back in the three spot for doubles as Emily Turke / Izabella Glinska defeated Jennifer Ansari/Carolina Mauch, 8-2. The win for Turke/Glinska was the second consecutive victory in doubles action for the duo.

In the number two doubles match, it was ASU's Laura Janke/Gisela Fernandez winning, 8-6, over Western's Lainez / Karen Jiménez Sarmiento.

Lainez claimed the lone WCU point and captured her second consecutive win by defeating Mauch, 6-1, 6-1 in the three spot. Massey, a senior for the Catamounts, battled in three sets, but fell, 1-6, 6-4, 7-10 to Ansari. In the top spot, Glinska was downed 0-6, 2-6, by Linsell.

Jiménez Sarmiento's three-match win streak was snapped by Appalachian State's Fernandez, 2-6, 3-6. Díaz dropped her match to Blakeley Bean, 3-6, 2-6, while Turke fell in straight-sets, 3-6, 0-6, to Heather Prior.

The Catamounts return home for a three-match homestand to close out the season. WCU will host SoCon foe Furman on Tuesday, April 13 at 3 pm. Coverage of the meet will be available online at CatamountSports.com.
