Volleyball Rebounds with 3-0 Sweep of UNCG

Oct. 1, 2011

Final Stats

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Western Carolina bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Elon Friday night, sweeping the UNCG Lady Spartans, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-22). The win is the second straight WCU win over the Lady Spartans, with last year's win being the lone SoCon win of 2010. Western Carolina improved to 7-12 (2-2 SoCon) while UNCG received its first SoCon loss, falling to 9-9 (2-1 SoCon).

The Catamounts won with an offensive output of 30 kills - the lowest number in a winning effort this season. It was enough, though, as Caitlin Piechota led the way in kills with nine. Jordan Timmermann and Rebecca Stoltz followed Piechota with seven and six kills, respectively.

Defensively, senior Carrie Minogue posted four block assists. Timmermann and Morgan Cochran tallied 15 and 14 digs apiece. Both Timmermann and Cochran lead the team in matches with double-digit digs with 10 and 9, respectively.

The Catamounts struck first winning the first set by a score of 25-18. After falling behind to an 11-8 deficit, the Catamounts came storming back to take a 14-13 lead. WCU would not trail again in the set.

In the second, UNCG would get out to an early 9-4 lead, but the Purple and Gold would go on a 5-0 streak behind the serve of Carrie Minogue to tie the match at nine. The two teams would trade points until three long runs of five, four and four would seal the second set in favor of the Catamounts, winning 25-17.

The final set was the closest of the match as UNCG would maintain a lead over the Catamounts until a Timmermann kill would give WCU a 21-20 lead with the Catamounts finishing the Lady Spartans off, 25-22.

The win marks the first time this season that WCU has swept a SoCon team this season. The last time the Catamounts have swept a SoCon opponent came back on Sept. 22, 2007 against Davidson. Also with the win, the Catamounts have picked up two conference wins for the first time since 2009.

Western Carolina continues its five-game road swing with a non-conference match up with UNC Asheville on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Catamounts defeated its mountain-rival earlier this season with a 3-1 win in Cullowhee.
