Western Carolina fell to Samford Saturday afternoon as the SoCon's North Division leader defeated the Catamounts in four sets (16-25, 29-27, 19-25, 18-25). The Catamounts fall to 12-19 (7-8 SoCon) while the Bulldogs improve to 26-3 (13-2 SoCon).
Samford was led by Elizabeth Neisler who finished with a match-high 18 kills. The Bulldogs had three others with double-digit kills. The SoCon's assist leader, Casey Garvey, dished out 58 assists.
Caitlin Piechota picked up another double-double for the Catamounts, posting 15 kills and 16 digs. Senior Carrie Minogue tallied 13 kills while classmate Brittany Lysik added 42 assists, tied for her second highest total of her career, and four service aces.
After dropping the first set 16-25, Western Carolina and Samford needed more than the normal 25 points to decide the winner. Samford reached set point first with a 24-22 lead over WCU. Bulldog service and hitting errors evened the match at 24. With the match tied at 27, Minogue hit two kills off of Lysik sets to win the set, knotting the two teams at the intermission.
Samford was then able to return from the intermission and take sets three and four. The Bulldogs outhit WCU .331 to .178.
The Catamounts will play their last regular season game tomorrow afternoon against the Mocs of Chattanooga. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. with live stats and a pay-based video stream available for the match.
