Two Catamounts had double-doubles in a match that saw 15 lead changes, but Georgia Southern would lead nearly the entire match, winning 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18) at the Ramsey Center Saturday night on Senior Night. Seniors Carrie Minogue, Rebecca Stoltz and Brittany Lysik were honored prior to the match.
The freshmen duo of Caitlin Piechota and Jordan Timmermann kept their double-double streak alive, picking up their fourth straight double-double. Timmermann tallied 14 kills and 10 digs while Piechota had 11 kills and 13 digs.
After falling behind 9-4 in the first set, the Catamounts made their first comeback of the night, climbing back to eventually tie the match at 12 following a kill by Brittany Lysik. The Eagles would answer with a 7-0 run behind the serve of Moriah Bellissimo, to give Georgia Southern a 22-13 lead. The Eagles took the first set 25-16.
Western Carolina got the offense going in the second set, jumping out to a 6-3 lead. The Eagles would continue to chip away at the Catamount lead, getting within one of WCU before a kill by Carrie Minogue would give Western Carolina a two-point, 12-10 lead. The two teams would trade points without either being able to put together a run until a 3-0 run by the Purple and Gold reaching a 23-19 lead, setting up a 25-21 win in the second set.
Set three would stay as close as the second, with neither team able to gain more than a three-point lead until Georgia Southern took a 23-20 lead late in the set. Two GSU kills by Nicole Jeschelnik and Hannah Nelson gave the Eagles the set and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Georgia Southern took an early 6-0 lead behind the serve of Kate Van Dyke. The Catamounts were able to side out with a kill by Jordan Timmermann. A Piechota kill and a Minogue service ace and kill would be the beginning of a comeback that would see Western Carolina tie the match at 12. Kate Van Dyke would lead the Eagles on a 3-0 run of their own that would give Georgia Southern the lead for good in the match. Georgia Southern would finish the match on a 7-0 sealed by a Lauren LaRocque, winning the set 25-18.
Georgia Southern was led by Meredith Paskert, who finished the match with a double-double. Paskert had a match-high 18 kills and 10 digs. Setter Kate Van Dyke had 49 assists on the night.
Western Carolina had five players in double figures in digs with sophomore libero Morgan Cochran totaling 20 digs. Paige McConlogue added 17 for the Catamounts.
Western Carolina will wrap up its home slate Tuesday evening against rival Appalachian State. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
