CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball (4-5, 0-2 Southern Conference) lost to rival Appalachian State (6-1, 2-0 SoCon) 82-46 Monday in the Ramsey Center.
A pair of freshman led the Catamounts in scoring. Freshmen guards Makensey Campbell and Ali Lane each had 10 points in the game. For the second straight game, Campbell has hit a pair of three-pointers and each have now scored in double figures twice this season.
As for the team, Western Carolina found itself in a hole early and could never dig itself out. The Catamounts shot an anemic 25 percent in the first half, and 27.5 percent overall, and couldn't keep up with the Mountaineers blistering 53.7 percent from the field.
Appalachian State also pounded the glass, ripping down 44 rebounds, more than doubling Western Carolina's output of 23 boards. Each team had 31 turnovers in the game, but it was the Mountaineers who were able to capitalize on the miscues, scoring 25 points off Catamount turnovers.
Western Carolina stayed in the game for most of the first half, until Canesha Edwards hit a pair of free throws, with 8:36 left in the half, to make the score 17-6. Appalachian State would lead by double figures the remainder of the game.
Appalachian State's Courtney Freeman recorded a double-double for the Mountaineers with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Western Carolina will have 10 days off before heading out on a Southern Conference road swing at Samford and at Chattanooga. The Catamounts will not return to the Ramsey Center until January 7 when they host UNCG.
