CHARLESTON,, S.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball (6-13, 1-9 Southern Conference) fell to College of Charleston (5-15, 4-7 SoCon) 54-39 Monday at TD Arena.
After taking an early 4-0 lead, off 4-of-6 from the free throw line, Western Carolina showed great defensive prowess but could never get the offense going. The Catamounts had a 6-3 lead when the Cougars' Cathryn Hardy nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at six. Hardy gave College of Charleston the lead for good, at 13:57 in the first half, off a jumper. College of Charleston would never trail again in the game.
Western Carolina suffered from its second straight game shooing an anemic 26 percent from the field. The Catamounts hit just one three pointer in the contest, a late trey from freshman Makensey Campbell, and was 1-of-13 from behind the arch.
The Catamounts managed 25 points off College of Charleston's 20 turnovers, committing just 11 themselves. However, the Cougars ripped down 50 rebounds, in the contest, to the Catamounts 33.
Redshirt junior Diamond Hunnicutt, who led Western Carolina with 10 points, hit a jumper with 3:24 remaining to trim the College of Charleston lead to 10, 46-36. The Cougars turned the Catamounts away, from any thought of making a comeback, going on an 8-3 run in the final three plus minutes. The Cougars were 4-of-6 from the free throw line to close out the game.
College of Charleston's Hardy was the only Cougar to score in double figures, with 10 points.
Western Carolina will return home Saturday, January 28, to host Wofford. Tip time is set for 2 p.m.
