Morganton, N.C. - Western Carolina was unable to repeat as the University Cup champions on Tuesday, falling to arch rival Appalachian State in the co-ed, head-to-head competition, 6-1, at the Mimosa Hills Country Club.

The Mountaineer men claimed the team gross score - which consists of the low four scores from each team - by a count of 291-to-297 over the Catamount men. Appalachian's women shot 320 to edge WCU by two strokes, 322.

The Catamount tandem of Matthew Turner and Maria Kjelldorff defeated Appalachian's Nick Buckwell and Ginny Thompson, 6-5, to score WCU's lone victory of the event. Turner also turned in the best individual round score for Western Carolina at one-under, 71.

Due to an injury that sidelined freshman Sofie Kvarnstrom at the turn, men's freshman J.T. Poston took on the Mountaineer pairing of Darren Cook and Rumbi Masammnu, falling 3-2, despite a round of 75.

The WCU women, who were coming off a three-day event in Kiawah Island, S.C. that ended on Tuesday were led by senior Blaire Minter with a round of 77 on Wednesday. Kjelldorff finished with an 80.

Western Carolina's men golf team returns to action at the Samford Intercollegiate at the Hoover Country Club in Alabama on March 5-6 while the women are off until March 9-11 when they compete in the Eagle Landing Invitational in Orange Park, Fla.
