CULLOWHEE, N.C. -

Western Carolina sent a select group to the Appalachian Open in preparation for the 2012 Southern Conference Championship that will be held next weekend in Cullowhee. Catamounts participated in the pole vault events and the men’s high jump. Even with the smaller group that traveled, WCU had five top-five finishes.

In the men’s pole vault, Catamounts filled three of the top-five positions. Redshirt sophomore Keith Leonard recorded a personal best clearing the bar successfully at 4.76m. Teammates Matt Stenger (4.61m) and Wayne Parker (4.46m) finished third and fifth, respectively. On the women’s side, Devyn Ressler recorded a personal best 3.36m, finishing third.

Competing in the high jump, freshman Cory Patterson tied his season-best with a jump of 1.91m.

The Catamounts return to action next weekend as Western Carolina hosts the 2012 Southern Conference Track & Field Championship with events taking place on Saturday and Sunday. The first events, the men’s 10,000m and hammer will begin at 9:30 am on Saturday morning. Admission to the meet is free.
