Catamounts Fall in Three Close Sets to Eagles

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina volleyball team fell to Georgia Southern in three tightly contested sets 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-21) in a Southern Conference match inside the Ramsey Center Saturday night.

Jordan Timmermann, for the fourth-straight match, led the Catamount attack with 11 kills, while Caitlin Piechota chipped in nine kills. Cristina Nazario handed out 31 assists, while Morgan Cochran picked up a match-high 20 digs.

Georgia Southern had more kills, 52-34, and more digs, 62-54, but WCU had more team blocks, 9-6, in the match. The Eagles also narrowly held a higher hitting percentage hitting a .175 clip compared to the Catamount's .161 hitting percentage.

Georgia Southern held the early advantage in the first set, 11-9, and even extended the gap out to, 22-16, but WCU rallied late and pulled even at 23 following a 7-1 run on the serve of Paige McConlogue. The two teams went back and forth as the Catamounts fought off set points at 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25. With the score tied at 26, the Eagles picked up the set one win, 28-26, following two kills.

In the second set with the score tied at 11, Georgia Southern strung together three points to take a 14-11 lead. The Eagles pushed the lead out to 19-13, but again the Catamounts rallied late. This time WCU trimmed the margin down 22-20. However, Georgia Southern won three of the final four points to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 set two win.

Set three again saw the Eagles take control as Georgia Southern pulled out to an 18-11 lead, and again WCU crawled its way back into the set. This time the Catamounts got within three points, 22-19, only the see Georgia Southern complete the sweep with a 25-21 set three win.

Western Carolina hits the road for a four-match road swing that begins at Davidson on October 25 for its next match.
